Spring Horse Show
Unagualified approval of a job well done rust be accorded Mr. C. W. Ross and his executive who so ably put on the 1952 Fidmonton Spring Horse Show. At a time when horses for utility and work are fast becoming a thing of the past on our farms, it is nevertheless re-assuring to know that lavers of good “horseflesh” are able to put on such an outstanding show.
Grant McEwan, of the University of Manitoba, announced that in at least one Class, Saddle Pairs, all entries were so well matched and of such a high standard that it was extremely difficult to make selection of prize winners.
It is unfortunate that more farmers of Northern Alberta did not know of the Spring Horse Show but we understand that this weakness in advance publicity will be correct- ed next year, Generally speaking, few farm- ers at this time of year subscribe to a daily paper and few have time to spend tong hours listening to the radio. Officials of the Northern Alberta Light Horse Society should try to fill in the gap another year by co-operating with the weekly press, which serves rural Alberta, on advertising and publicity.
New Yacht bie ino Quseek
The British have decided to build the royal family e@ new yacht. The present royal yacht was built for Queen Victoria,
and has lain for years in Portsmouth harbor, condemned as “unseaworthy” by the Admiralty,
The new royal yacht will be a four thousand ton, twenty-one-knot, fifty-five
beam eraft. It will cost about three mil- jion dollars and will be convertible to a hospital ship in time of war.
Britain has always provided its rulers with adequate seagoing transportation but in reeent vears this tradition has been neglected. King George VI was the first
vuling monarch in three centuries who did net own a seagoing yacht. Charles I] had twenty-six yachts. Queen Victoria
had eight built during her sixty-four year
eign. In England a royal yacht jis not considered a luxury but a necessity. And since the Duke of Edinburgh served with’
the Royal Navy in the last war as a Lieut.- ‘Commander, ino command of the frigate Magpie, it is altogether fitting that the Roval couple enjoy a royal yacht at least that is how the British Conservative Sovernment feels about it,

The Church and the Gospel
By T. W. PUP
Speeches given at the Conference in. Lethbridge several Church leaders are work being done by the
Church that the
recent United would indicate not satisfied with Church. I wonder if in considering the “work” of the Church, church leaders of today are feeling any real satisfaction with the message being delivered from the pulpits, Sunday by Sunday, in our present day churches
If is possible for a person to attend church
from the day of their christening to the day of their death, and never know the fundamental pur- pose for the church's existence
Many of our present day preachers and min- isters are like John Wesley, who, born and brought up in the atmosphere of the Chureh of England of the early eighteenth century, became a renowned preacher of great elo quence, acceptable to any pulpit in Londen. But that was before John Wesley found that he had the form of Christian faith only and not the substance
Wesley found, afteg a sionary trip to America and a meeting-up with a smal) group of German Moravian Christians that he was not converted, not saved, not Dorn again
But John Wesley, like the Prodigal son, did indeed come to a knowledge of his soul's lost con- dition and after years of formal Christianity took on the very substance in a right-about-face con- version and joyfully sprang to the task of preach- ing his new-found gospel in the old familiar pulpits
If any argument was required to prove John Wesley was a new man “born again” it is this that. tus old church associates didn't want him preaching the gospel of salvation in their cbhurehes! So the veteran preacher, but new convert had to gO oUt into the “highways and byways” ot England to preach to the unchurched common people of England. And from that began the great Methodist movement that brought in its wake not only the great spiritual changes but also the social reveln- the 8th and 19th centuries
NEEDED: A 1952 WRSLEY Travellers from England these days report that the gospel of salvation through the vicarious sufferings of Christ is now being preached in the ‘low Church of England, but net the “high.” Présent«lay Methodists and Baptists seem to avoid it today in England as so many of them do here tn Canada. It is unusual to hear a Baptist or United Church Minister tell their con- gregetion that they have to accept the Lord Jesus personal saviour if they are to gain Ever.

WHY NOT PAINT A CLEAR PICTURE?
. UProm the Camrose Canadian)
There is'a group of people who are trying to confuse the rural electrification picture in Alberta. rhey are undoubtedly sincere in their desire to make the utility & publicly owned affair. They use comparisons between Alberta and Manitoba and between Alberta and Saskatchewan to entice the \lberta farmers under their wing.
It is true that Manitoba builds the lines direet to the farm to be served and that there are 27,000 farms already electrified in Mani- toba. It is also true that the Manitoba Power Commission owes the Provincial Government the com of $35,000,000 with an addi- tien of $10,000,000 under author- ivation and not vet ¢ ,pended, This
part of the storv is never men tiyned from the public platform.
4nd another thing, Manitoba has had a survlus of power since 1970 and has been in the rural tlectrification nicture for twenty vears, Likewise, the Saskatche-
wan Power Commission owes the Saskatchewan Provincial Govern ment $41.000,000.

This province -has made no bones of its inability to construct free rura) lines to farm premises. Saskatchewan is not so fortunate- ly situated as either Manitoba or Alberta in the matter of power resources. She has few hydro potentials near to present centres of population. Should Alberta decide to make power a publicly owned utility at the present time. the Province would be required to assume an additional bonded t- debtedness of $100,000,000.
As far as rates go at the present time. Alberta customers = enjoy rates as low as Manitoba a: lower than Saskatchewan and ar not earrving any of the indebtedness as an indirect cha) awainst the utility.
